SOLAR ECLIPSE
What: Solar Eclipse Gazing – This is not an official CCAA event!
When: Monday, April 8, 2024
Location: Please go outside, wherever you are located at the time of the eclipse. Don’t forget to take pictures wearing your glasses and t-shirts, then tag CCAA on Facebook or post them in our group!
Times (CST): Max solar eclipse totality at 1:32pm
Event Details: The eclipse is expected to begin at 12:14pm, reach maximum totality at 1:32pm, and end at 2:55pm. This will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous United States until 2044. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. People viewing the eclipse from locations where the Moon’s shadow completely covers the Sun – known as the path of totality – will experience a total solar eclipse. The sky will darken, as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people along the path of totality will see the Sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun. When a solar eclipse reaches totality, nocturnal wildlife sometimes wakes up, thinking that it’s nighttime, and non-nocturnal wildlife might think it’s time to head to sleep!

What: Star Party
When: Sunday, April 7, 2024
Location: McNair Park, 211 Park Rd, Sunrise Beach Village, TX 78643
Time: Approximately 6:30pm
Event Details: The CCAA Sunrise Beach Village Star Party will start before dusk, and will include lots of fun and educational activities. Join us to learn about the solar system, the total solar eclipse occurring the next day, as well as view the night sky with astronomers and telescopes from the Austin Astronomical Society.
